Inadequate earthing and bonding is one of the most common EICR failures in Essex properties. We explain what's involved and cover all key Essex areas including Chelmsford, Colchester, Basildon and more.
Earthing and bonding are two of the most critical — and most misunderstood — aspects of electrical safety in UK homes. Inadequate earthing or bonding is one of the most common reasons for EICR failures, and it's something we address regularly across Essex.
What Is Earthing?
Earthing provides a safe path for fault current to flow to earth in the event of an electrical fault. Without adequate earthing, a fault could cause a dangerous voltage to appear on metal parts of appliances or pipework — creating a serious risk of electric shock.
What Is Bonding?
Bonding connects metallic services (gas pipes, water pipes, structural steelwork) to the earthing system, ensuring they remain at the same electrical potential. There are two types:
Main Protective Bonding — connects the main incoming services (gas, water) to the main earthing terminal. Supplementary Bonding — connects metallic parts within specific locations (bathrooms, kitchens) to prevent dangerous potential differences.
