Regular maintenance keeps your AC running efficiently, extends its lifespan, and prevents costly breakdowns. Here's what you can do yourself — and what needs a professional.

Air conditioning systems are reliable, but they're not maintenance-free. A little regular attention keeps your unit running at peak efficiency and prevents the kind of breakdowns that always seem to happen on the hottest day of the year.

What You Can Do Yourself

Clean or Replace the Air Filter

The air filter is the single most important maintenance task for any AC owner. A dirty filter restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and can cause the indoor unit to freeze up.

How often: Every 4–6 weeks during heavy use, or monthly as a minimum. How to do it: Most wall-mounted indoor units have a front panel that lifts or slides off to reveal the filter. Remove it, rinse under warm water, allow to dry completely, and replace. Never run the unit without the filter.

Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear

The outdoor condenser unit needs good airflow to work efficiently. Check regularly that:

No plants, leaves, or debris have accumulated around or on top of the unit.
The fins (the metal grilles on the sides) are not bent or blocked.
There's at least 30cm of clear space around all sides.

Check the Condensate Drain

The indoor unit produces condensate (water) as it cools the air. This drains away through a pipe. If the drain becomes blocked, water can overflow and cause damage. Check that water is draining freely from the outdoor drain pipe during operation.

Wipe Down the Indoor Unit

Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the front panel and louvres of the indoor unit. Never use water or cleaning sprays directly on the unit.

What Needs a Professional

Annual Service

We recommend an annual service by an F-Gas certified engineer. This includes:

Deep cleaning of the evaporator and condenser coils.
Checking refrigerant levels and inspecting for leaks.
Testing all electrical connections and components.
Checking system pressures and performance.
Clearing and flushing the condensate drain.

Refrigerant Top-Up

Only F-Gas certified engineers can legally handle refrigerants. If your system is low on refrigerant (signs include reduced cooling, ice on the indoor unit, or hissing sounds), call a professional.

Signs Your AC Needs Attention

  • Reduced cooling or heating output.
  • Ice forming on the indoor unit.
  • Water dripping from the indoor unit.
  • Unusual noises — rattling, hissing, or grinding.
  • Unpleasant smells when the system runs.
  • Significantly higher energy bills.
