Switching to LED lighting is one of the quickest ways to cut your energy bills. We break down the real numbers for Essex homeowners and businesses.

With energy prices remaining high, LED lighting upgrades have become one of the most popular requests we receive from both homeowners and businesses across Essex. The savings are real — and often larger than people expect.

The Numbers: LED vs Traditional Lighting

A traditional 60W incandescent bulb costs approximately £10.95 per year to run (based on 3 hours per day at current average UK electricity rates). An equivalent LED bulb uses just 8–9W, costing around £1.46–£1.64 per year. That's a saving of over £9 per bulb, per year.

For a typical 3-bedroom home with 20 light fittings, switching entirely to LED could save £180+ per year on electricity bills alone.

For commercial premises with hundreds of fittings, the savings can run into thousands of pounds annually.

Beyond the Bulb: Full LED Retrofits

Simply swapping bulbs is just the start. A full LED retrofit involves:

Replacing outdated fluorescent tube fittings with modern LED panels or tubes.
Installing LED downlights to replace halogen spotlights (which run very hot and consume far more energy).
Upgrading external lighting to LED floodlights and bollards.
Adding occupancy sensors and daylight-linked dimming controls to maximise savings.

Payback Period

For most homes, the payback period on a full LED upgrade is 1–3 years. For commercial premises, it's often under 12 months when combined with smart controls.

Environmental Impact

LED bulbs last up to 25,000 hours — compared to 1,000 hours for incandescent bulbs. This means less waste and fewer replacements. LEDs also contain no mercury, unlike fluorescent tubes.

Is Your Wiring Compatible?

Most modern wiring is fully compatible with LED lighting. However, some older dimmer switches are not designed for LED loads and may need replacing to avoid flickering. Our engineers will check compatibility as part of any LED upgrade.
